What Is Root Canal Treatment?

Endodontic treatment, also referred to as root canal treatment, involves the removal of infected or inflamed pulp tissue from the interior of a tooth. The treatment can help save a damaged or infected tooth that might otherwise require extraction.

How Is a Root Canal Treatment Performed?

At Cotton Tree Dental, we understand that root canal treatment can feel daunting for patients. Our team takes a calm, considered approach to each appointment, explaining every step along the way and working to make the process as manageable as possible for each individual patient.

Your Initial Consultation

Your first visit begins with a thorough examination of your teeth and gums. Your dentist reviews your symptoms, takes digital X-rays, and assesses the root canals to determine the extent of the infection.

Numbing and Accessing the Tooth

Local anaesthetic is administered to numb the area around the affected tooth. Once you are comfortable, your dentist creates a small opening in the tooth to reach the infected pulp and root canals. The area is thoroughly isolated to keep the treatment site clean throughout the procedure.

Cleaning and Disinfecting the Canal

The infected pulp and diseased tissue are carefully removed from each canal using fine instruments. The canals are then shaped, irrigated, and disinfected to eliminate bacteria and further infection, preparing the tooth for a permanent filling and final restoration.

Sealing the Root Canals

The cleaned and dried canals are filled with gutta-percha, a biocompatible rubber-like material that seals the space against bacterial re-entry. The opening in the tooth is then closed with a filling to protect the interior of the tooth.

Protecting the Tooth With a Restoration

Following root canal treatment, a dental crown is often recommended to protect the tooth from fracture, as treated teeth can become more brittle over time. The right restoration for your tooth will be discussed at your follow-up appointment.
